Port Reception Facilities

Port authorities have the responsibility of providing adequate port reception facilities for ship-generated waste. The facilities shall meet the needs of the ships normally using the harbour without causing undue delay for the ships.

Harbour masters provide further information on available port reception facilities. Information on harbour facilities and contact information can also be found on the websites of the relevant harbours.

Masters of ships, other than fishing boats and recreational craft authorized to carry no more than 12 passengers, are required to notify in advance of the intention to deliver ship-generated waste to port reception facilities (advance waste notification). The notification shall be made:

  • At least 24 hours prior to arrival, if the port of call is known;
  • As soon as the port of call is known, if this information is available less than 24 hours prior to arrival;
  • At the latest upon departure from the previous port, if the duration of the voyage is less than 24 hours.

The advanced waste notification shall be sent to port authorities whether the intention is to deliver waste or not.

If a ship‘s master or agent finds the reception facilities in a port inadequate, this should be reported to the administration of the flag State and a copy sent to the Environment Agency of Iceland (as the port State  authority) using the format provided here.

The report may be submitted to the EAI here
